Actually, I don't even think 2012 is going to be literally the end of the world.
In this age we are approaching the same count again, only there is a common misconception of the Maya's practice of abbreviating their dates to five vigesimal places. According to the Maya there will be a baktun ending in 2012, a significant event being the end of the 13th 394 year period, but not the end of the world.
It can be a common misconception because when they wrote the calendar it was in ancient times. You can't blame old dudes by making a mistake on interpreting something that's going to happen. A ll we have to do now is enjoy being alive and not worry about such things.
